The world never changes, John!
Whether in broadcasting or in ham radio, people want to see those meters
move, so they crank up the pots and talk louder until everything is banging
against the pin and splattering from DC to light. At least in broadcasting,
we can hide the controls from the twitchy fingers crowd.

It's taken over 40 years for the DSP world to equal what Central Electronics
had oh-so long ago in the 100V & 200V - clean, phasing SSB generation and a
built-in oscilloscope to help you keep it on target.

IMHO, if you took an old CE exciter and added the same level of phase shift
precision that you find in today's hot new rigs, you'd most likely hear the
sweetest audio on the air. Everything old is new again.

I don't know what rigs many hams were using in the last WW phone contest,
but there was lots of splatter from one end of the bands to the other.
Atrocious stuff.
