Thanks to all who responded. It turns out that running smartdrv solved my
problem.
I am ashamed I forgot about smart drive. When I was supporting Win 3.1 PC's
I dealt with it everday. But that was ages ago, at least 10 computer years
(1:3 ratio, dog years 1:7). I wished I had remembered this little trick.
It cost me the first 6 hours of the SS!
The real test will be the next contest, but everything looks good so far. I
will consider modifying smartdrv for read cache only, but modern IDE drives
are pretty reliable.
For those that asked, the machine was running in DOS mode, NOT a window.
It's a MicroSlate ruggedized Pen computer with touch screen, PIII 266 64MB
2GB HD. Yes, its overkill.
