Well, there's a little trick here. Turn off the amp and reduce your
power as much as possible. Then reply to the idiot and give him a
report.

Also if the DX station is in simplex mode and there is a big pile, and
you can't just crush the pile, offsetting your transmit freq by plus or
minus 150 to 200 Hz can make you stand out from the rest of the pack.

It occurs to me that the guys who know most of the tricks to working DX
stations in a pile are those experienced operators who use low power or
poor antennas. A good bag of tricks is a necessity in this situation. If
you have a big antenna and lots of power, just go right over the top of
the pile.

Nope, comes from years and years of DXing. You have to "read" the op,
and some, like A61AJ, have "habits" you can remember. Years and years
ago, I remember Gus Browing was holding forth from some place in Nepal
or something, and he had the damnedest pile you will ever hear just
calling and calling. Finally, ( and at about 40 wpm ), Gus sent:
"Everyone up 5". I actually had my hand on the dial of the SB100 when my
mind said:
"Everyone?" About that time, Gus came back on and said: "Well, that
ought to take care of the lids...QRZ"
Got him about 2 calls after that.
I miss those days...
