Your capability to push out a strong signal should be a factor in this
discussion...
If you are in S&P, using a G5RV at 20' and 100W on 80m, then it will probably
pay strong returns to use a longer response - because
that will cut down on the run station having to ask you to repeat. You just
cannot assume that he had good copy the first time.
Here I am assuming the run station is being copied without error on your end
(if not, the issue goes both ways - but for a run
station, you as the S&P have the repeated chance to get his call right when you
are setting up to work the guy). This particular
issue is really a problem - especially if the S&P sends the exchange only one
time, and somehow has missed the magic of using
trailing or leading spaces - making a marginal situation worse.
On the other hand, if you are sitting on 3 elements at 180' with a KW heating
up the yagi, then you can probably make a safe
assumption that the run station is going to copy you very well - and even if
you are only sending the NR a time or two, it's a
pretty good bet that your signal strength alone provides some added
differentiation with the other stations which will help the run.
Even in this case, a trailing space is a winner.
This is not specific to BARTG - it's applicable to all the contests.

I normally don't like to get drawn into this type of discussions; but going
to make an exception on this thread.
I have to agree with both Dick and Jim on this one. With the congestion on
the bands, not sending the calling stations card with the report is uncalled
for. If the 20 nanoseconds is that important to you, so be it. Have at it.
My solution is very simple : My operating is 99% S&P, if I come across a
station who is sending nothing but the report fine, this station obviously
does not need my contact nor possibly the WV multiplier. I will tune pass
you and your score will be down one qso. But hey, you've gained 20
nanoseconds. Wow!
Have a good day and see you in the contest; but only if you are sending a
full exchange.

I had some fun in the BARTG SPRINT> Worked 186 Q's and a score of 49,104
points.
There were two posts about the BARTG exchange that I disagree with. Both
operators stated all they need from a call was the serial number. They did
not want the call sign. I sent NR NR NR KS0M as my exchange in S&P. Here is
one reason why sending only the serial number can be a problem. The band was
crowded, I answered a call, when he replied all I got was "KS0" and callers
on each side of him blasted his reply and I could not copy. I sent "AGN
AGN". Due to the QRM I never got his exchange. I use a 250 HZ filter in
contests and the two close by calls were on the edge of my band pass. I was
going to call him again but then I copied him sending "TU KS0M QRZ BARTG" He
evidently copied the exchange of one of the other close by station who sent
a serial number only. I did not send an exchange. Had the one sending a
number only exchange added hic call, the op I was trying to work would have
realized it was not from me. As a result, he is not in my log, I lost a
contact and he will lose a contact because and maybe be penalized because he
is not in my log. We both wasted out time.
You can keep you exchange too short. I want to make sure in an exchange that
we both know who we are working.
