RTTY contesting is growing like crazy. And with the sunspot cycle picking up
(at it's snail's pace), tight bands are going to be
the constant environment going forward...
The rig's filtering is commonly used when it's arguable that the better choice
is to use tight filters on the software. I think
Chen has mentioned that with the typical sound card, roughly an 80 db SNR range
can be accommodated by the typical PC sound card
now. And by letting the RTTY software take care of the filtering instead of
the rig, the receiving is more optimal. And depending
on the specific filter, a tight crystal filter can actually reduce the ability
to recover signals by the software because of
distortions introduced by the filter. You don't have the same problems with
the software filter in MMTTY and the others...
I suspect the reason that using the rig's filtering as primary instead of a
wideband and then letting the software do the filtering
is because guys tune by ear - instead of by waterfall or scope. And not having
a rig-based filter when tuning by ear makes doing
that quickly quite tough if the software skirts are steep.

Those of us without a narrow filter (minimum 400 Hz on my TS-2000)
appreciate every bit of spread between signals. Far too many times I'd be
trying to work one signal when another would come up less than 100Hz away
and drown it out.
