In a computer-generated log (not Cabrillo), assign 0 points to it.
In a Cabrillo log, there is nothing to do - the log checking software
will automatically throw out dupes.
The days of unmarked dupes being penalized results from non-computer
checking of logs. Now that most logs are checked by computer, the
software can identify the dupes and discard them automatically, no penalty.
So it's simple - work every who calls you, regardless of whether they
have called before. The QSO takes longer than the explanation. The
chance of being duped early in a contest (when the rate is higher) is
low. The chance of being duped late in a contest (when the rate is
low) is higher, but there's so much dead time between QSOs that
working an extra guy won't impact the score.
It's also less operator fatigue to just treat all callers the same,
whether they are a dupe or not:
ENTER calls CQ
INSERT sends EXCHANGE
ENTER sends TU, QRZ
repeat
Just keep the same rhythm going all the time. Anything you do that
upsets that rhythm will cost you time and/or brain cells, two things
you can not afford to waste during a contest.
