You are correct Jack, there is absolutely no animosity at all! The amateur
community is (I hope) still based on mutual understanding and respect...
That said, the decision on Yukon was underway this time last year. A
decision by the Community Services Officer at RAC for the creation of the
section was possibly as early as March/April, formalized by early May and
distributed / announced electronically in June. ARRL put out the news in a
weekly published bulletin. At this stage it's really here neither nor
there...it is what it is. I suppose the issue is really that there was no
decision for ARRL to make...just follow the rules they had already. I
understand there are limited resources and capabilities at ARRL like
everywhere else...there are also competing interests amongst some...I won't
get into the issue of the 'Emergency Comms' section folks don't communicate
well, or often, with the contest community and vice versa. Trust me, I am
somewhat close to the ongoing discussions as the new, reluctant, and
'first' Section manager for Yukon. In retirement, no good deeds go
unpunished. The last thing I want to do as a fledgling contester is
alionate the contest community. I spent over 35 yrs in National Law
Enforcement, including major event management, and know only too well, if
things really go sideways it won't be the volunteers in yellow vests with
hand helds--important though they may be--that carry the day, it will be
the stations with superior capabilities and HF know how. Which, ironically,
brings us full circle to the purpose of Sweeps; pass traffic amongst
organized, existing sections.
I have more than overstayed my welcome on this topic. Wishing everyone the
best...
Scott
All the best,
Scott
