Peter, I don't think there was any RBN active when this QRP world
record on 160 was allegedly achieved. I was measuring ground wave
signals that are very reliable without even considering skip
possibilities. If there is anyone who thinks that under such
circumstances that "4.7 watts" can be equal to 1500 watts, at nearly the
same distance, I would like to sell them some swampland in Georgia that
I have been trying to get rid of for 40 years.
Over the years I have participated in many 160 meter contests. I have
even started at under 5 watts and called CQ Test for several hours
without any reply. But when I cranked the rig up to 1.5KW I was able to
get a very substantial pile up and proceeded the rest of the contest
that way as a high power entry. let's face it "4.7 watts to any good
antenna has considerable limitations on 160 meters. Just try it sometime.

Is there not a archive of RBN readings for the contest(s) in question?
Could the two (or more) stations SNR not be compared at various points around
the world? If signal strengths between two stations in different power
categories are very similar, something is suspicious. Just asking... Paul

Pedro is consistently one of the strongest stations on the low bands here
in
Germany, he certainly would detect any problem with his 160m antenna and
for
sure a 25db loss.

Yes, we need more than just "radiated power" to have a QSO.
Even though, perhaps KP4KE's bazooka does not show 25dB gain, but NP4A can
have a 25dB loss!
Unfortunately it's easier to make a lossy antenna than a good one,
particularly on the low bands were ground losses can be high.
