Jim brings up a good point that didn't cross my work addled mind last night.
On 10m FM you aren't going to get 60+% efficiency. Add to that 1500W
continuous carrier on FM for lets say an hour? The Pi-L tank will be a
puddle in the bottom of the cabinet. What's an 8877 rated for in CCS
service (since ICAS is now verboten)?

All day, key down, maximum smoke? I doubt it.
That seems to be the new standard around here. Any amplifier topology
that can't meet that ridiculous standard isn't worthy. Oh, don't
forget the 20:1 matching range auto-tuner so you can run all day key
down maximum smoke on FM and RTTY (people really do that?) using crap
antenna's, and it better not cost more than the shelled out SB-220 I
bought 40 years ago.

Hey Kevin: I disagree with your comment. I have two hf amps using
the 8877 and they both operate very quietly without use of humongous
blower. One of them is the Viewstar PT-3000A and other one is the
alpha 9500.

No way a pair or trio of 3-500Z's does 1500W FM/RTTY key down all day.
An 8877 won't do it either without having a very big, very loud blower.

Me too. When this amp was first announced I was pretty gung ho for
it, but now I'm not so sure. A single 8877 will do anything the SS
amps will do except instant-on, and if that's really important to you,
a pair or trio of 3-500Z's will fill the bill.
If you think about it, a pi or pi-L network in the plate circuit is a
wonderful thing. Not only does it's Q reduce harmonics it also matches
impedance and compensates for SWR (reactance) all at the same time,
something a SS amp by itself can not do.
Maybe I'll keep my 9500 after all.
