Switching between CW and SSB voltages doesn't stress the switch much. Turning
the amp on results in a large surge through the on/off switch. This can be
minimized
by starting the amp in the CW position. Better still is a soft-start circuit.

I do just the opposite, I switch to CW/tune each time to try to save the
unobtainium on/off switch from higher inrush current...
