Thing is,
If you were to stick with just one voltage, and say the switch did go
bad, what is wrong with just by-passing the switch all together and just
connect the wires to each other as the switch is doing? And just not
have it at all anyway?

I do just the opposite, I switch to CW/tune each time to try to save the
unobtainium on/off switch from higher inrush current...
