Since 1985 I've been using a single-3-500Z HB amp. that uses in the
HV PS a hermetically sealed Collins transformer that I'm told came
out of the WW2-era 115V PS used to power an ART-13 transmitter. I
bought this transformer from Fair Radio Sales, and it has performed
flawlessly over the years, barely getting warm even after long
operating sessions at 600W output.
The transformer has dual 115V primaries and a C-T 2250V
secondary. Due to the label, which indicates a working voltage on
the primaries of 165V, I've always run the amp on 117V, with the two
primaries in parallel. The label also indicates a working voltage for
the HV side of 1650V (if I remember correctly). Therefore, instead of
bridging the whole secondary, I just used half the secondary,
followed by a voltage doubler. Always worked like a champ.
Here's my question: Has anyone on the list used this transformer
with 234V on the primary? I assume the 165V working voltage refers to
each winding, which in series each winding would only "see" 117V, but
I'm not sure. I'd like to hear from anyone who's actually done this
successfully.
