[Skimmertalk] CW Skimmer Problem - Win 10?

G’day Bob,

JOY!

Yes, CW Skimmer 2.1. Set to SDR-IQ. Tried 192, 96 and 48 kHz. Nothing connected to RS-232 port, no transceiver. Antenna connected directly to the BNC connector.

It appears that starting SpectraVue first *was* the issue. Rebooted laptop, powered down SDR-IQ, and brought it all back up. Started CW Skimmer, and it works as expected! I then tried each of the five configured instances of CW Skimmer on this laptop, and all are working.

I cannot imagine that I had not ever started SpectraVue before CW Skimmer at any time in the past 12 years I’ve been using this software/hardware, but perhaps something has change in the way SpectraVue ‘tweaks’ the receiver or the driver. We have been using this CW Skimmer version (2.1) for over two years on this laptop without problem.

Thanks for the guidance, Bob!

I should be getting these SDR-IQs ready to take to PJ2T for the CQWW 160 CW Contest in week or so, but I am not yet ready to risk the travel through three airports and two airplane flights each direction with COVID rampant in Ohio and Florida. Curacao just decided to let the ‘plague rat’ Americans in effective January 1, but the airline has not yet re-established all the connections that would make travel connections from Ohio less “iffy”.

Are you running CW Skimmer 2.1?

In the Settings Menu, Radio tab, is radio type still set to SDR-IQ? What sampling rate?

Is the RS232 port of the SDR-IQ connected to your transceiver to get frequency information?

Is the antenna port connected to an IF output of a transceiver, or to an antenna? Or RX ANT out of a transceiver? Is RX ANT enabled in the transceiver?

I suggest power cycling the SDR-IQ, then start CW Skimmer (do not run SpectraView first, as it may reset the parameters of the SDR to different values compared to what CW Skimmer wants).

I received a new SDR-IQ receiver to add to my collection (my 8th), and was testing it. I have SpectraVue and CW Skimmer (several instances) previously installed on the laptop used. They both have worked in the past, but I have not used them in the past year.

The new SDR-IQ worked fine with SpectraView, but when I tried it with CW Skimmer v2.1, parallel green lines filled the Skimmer display rather than the expected CW signals. It then locks up and will not exit cleanly on request. I repeated with one of my other known-good SDR-IQs, and it behaved the same.

I’m wondering: did I miss some Windows-update changes in the past year that affected CW Skimmer operation? I looked through the archives, but found no mention of drivers being overwritten, etc.

Thanks & 73, Jeff K8ND / PJ2ND
