You can reduce current drain if you will use a set of unused contacts to
switch the lamps off and on. If you have the digital model, there is a
button to shut off the display, I think, and you can run the meter lamp lead
through a spare contact. I don't know about the analog Argosy's contact
nomenclature.
I would think the basic rig would draw on the order of 1.5 amps on low power
but that's speculation.

I have an Argosy and think it would fun to use it as a portable rig.
Has anybody built up a portable supply for it? The listed specs say it
draws .5 A on RX and 9 A. Max. Is it really 2 A. total at low power ( 5
W)? as an extrapolation ? The FT-817 runs about 2A on transmit aso I
would think I would be in that range. At least one person is using a
5000 mah battery as a supply for the 817. Just thinking out load.
