Actually, this shows that unless you insist, TenTec will NOT CHARGE YOU FOR
UNNECESSARY WORK!!!
Those techs are great. They have a lot of experience. What they are saying is
that the cost of going down to a specific component is greater than the value
of the radio if you have to pay a technician who has to at least break even for
his/her effort.
If you choose to do it on your own, we all know the value of our own time.
$0.00 - it's what we love to do.
Don't take this wrong, I have 2 Omni VI+ and love them . I think they do some
things better than any other rig I've ever owned (and I've used a lot of
different stuff in 45+ years as a ham). If I get a sick logic board, I'll be
sick, too. I also just bought an Omni VII. Love it so far. Old rigs are great,
just be prepared to keep them running on your own, or lose them to old age.
It's known by the history of the Omni VI+, Paragon, etc, that if the logic
board gets sick, that's old technology and whether we like it or not, and it's
not economically sound to have TenTech fix it.

Agree. I think I'd ask TT to get VERY specific about what part failed -
not just say it's a bad board thinking that sort of reply gets them
off the hook. This problem has wider ramifications about company policy
in general. (And I should say that I am not sure about which part we
are talking about, so my comments are of a general nature.)
For instance: It's one thing to say that a rig like a
Triton has limited possibilities for final replacement because of
obsolete transistors or that it's hard and expensive to find
MRF458's for the Corsairs and others and quite another thing to trash
an entire radio because of a single failed non-RF chip - IMHO. One need
only to look at a VI brochure to see how the rig was marketed (i.e.,
with a computer ...)
TT has always been up front with their engineering and schematics and
I wonder if something is changing. I MIGHT understand proprietary issues
with custom software are involved, but hey - if I end up having that
problem with my VI+ I will guarantee TT an earful :)
So if this is the case, why should I abandon my VI+ to purchase a VII
only to have the same thing done to me again at some future time? Seems
like a good way for a company to loose customers; a company whose
followers have almost a religious devotion to them.
