I used Dawn dish detergent (applied with an old toothbrush) to cut through
the old grease. In only one PTO did I think I saw signs of wear -- the
bearing race had a groove "worn" in it. Looking back on it, I'd bet that
was the way it was machined before Ten-Tec found it could reduce the cost of
that part by not machining the groove. Otherwise the parts have never been
necessary for me.
When rebuilding, I've found a shallow pan like a pizza pan is handy to hold
little parts, mainly the little bearings.
Before you remove the PTO, BE SURE TO WRITE DOWN WHAT WIRE CONNECTS TO WHERE
on the side of the PTO.
