I have this or a similar problem with my Orion I, but only on bands on freqs
above 18 MHz. AS I turn up the power the red ALC light comes on and the
power meter gives a little "bounce" and the power stops increasing. How
much power depends on the band. TenTec service people just say "reboot" and
if that doesn't work wiggle all the connectors inside, and if that doesn't
work, send it to us.

As has been suggested, the power plug and fuse may be an issue. You and
your
friend might want to check out:

I did this mod to my Orion and I'm very happy with it..

Subject: [TenTec] Orion I, reduced output power ???

A friend of mine in DL has trouble with his Orion I.
The output power is now at about 85 watts.
This is independent of band.
Small changes in the 13v supply has no influence on the power.
He does not know if this happened all at once or just started to decay over
time.
I have advised him to try a second watt meter, dummy load, change coax,
etc., just to be sure it is the radio and not something else.
Grateful for any ideas or tips where we could look.
Tnx

Rick
