How are you measuring output power? If you use a peak-reading meter, you should see the same PEP output as you do with the radio in CW, but I have noticed, as have others on the list, that the average power on SSB is less than from other rigs. I suspect this has to do with the digital software ALC overriding the hardware analog ALC. Hardware ALC will give a higher average output, especially when pushed hard, although this may come at the expense of increased IMD and poor CW pulse shape causing key-clicks. I think that the software ALC is rigged to pull back the drive and hold it back just when the hardware ALC starts to activate.

I would like to see TT address this in an update since the current method, while very conservative, may be more than is needed. Letting the hardware ALC push higher into its range would increase average SSB power without introducing distortion or splatter, although the action in CW seems to work just fine.

I am finding that the output drive from the Icom Pro
II produces better output to my Alpha 99 versus the
Orion II. THat is 35-38 watts from the PRO II. Only
diff is changing of the transceiver. I use a
Ameritron ARB-704 and a Nye Viking Tuner in the line.

What could be causing this to happen ??

I can consistently get 1500 out driving the Alpha 99.
Orion I do not get 1500.

Anyone else seen this ?? Is there a setting I am
missing with the Orion..

Please contact me offline if you have some
suggestions.
