He wouldn't have to mess with the socket, John, just open the DIN plug and move the wire from pin 5 to pin 7. That would work fine.

I would speculate that they either found a cable
vendor that made the cable that way or they are trying
to use the cable for several different
rigs/applcations.  It's your rig and you do what you
want to it but I would just make up a cable rather
than tamper with the socket.
