Ed, that does help.  Thanks for your detailed reply.  

I modified my computer to radio FSK transmit interface, removing the 2N4402 
PNP transistor, and connecting TXD (pin 3) of the DB9 serial connector through 
a 1K resistor to the Mark/Space input on the rear of the OMNI VI Plus just as 
you described.  FSK transmit works now.  Using the PNP transistor as shown on 
http://www.aa5au.com/rttyinterface.html for the OMNI VI Plus did not work for 
me.  Direct through a 1K resistor does.
