Good suggestion, Duane. I just disconnected the DB-25 to the PC and the 301
remote encoder works fine connected through the "Y" adapter with the other
side "open". I then reversed sides to the 301 and it still works fine. It
just doesn't want to work with the PC serial port in "parallel" although the
PC interface works fine.

Does the 301 work if you plug it thru the Y-adapter and have the other
side of the Y disconnected? If not, then you may have gotten a cable
that does not have all the pins wired.
