Carl's comments are very correct. One other difference is in the 100 KHz to
1.7 MHz range. The front end switching and attenuation does reduce the
sensitivity on the Paragon II. Also the Paragon II memory will be retained
after power is turned off. The Paragon required a 9 V battery which was
recharged by external power to hold the memory. It was only good for about
10 days without recharging. After that, all memory and clock settings
reverted to factory defaults. And the Paragon II provides 10 Hz display all
the time. That feature required initialization on the Paragon. The Paragon
II has a different SLOW AGC time constant. The Paragon SLOW AGC was quite
fast but could be easily changed by changing a cap to 22 mfd as I recall
(I'll look if anyone want to know.)
I'm sure there are other differences and improvements but these are the ones I can recall at the moment. 73 Bob, K4TAX----- Original Message ----- From: "Carl Moreschi" <n4py@arrl.net> To: "Discussion of Ten-Tec Equipment" <tentec@contesting.com> Sent: Saturday, August 06, 2005 9:12 PM Subject: Re: [TenTec] Paragon Question Ken, The Paragon II has band registers and a much nicer user interface. It is much closer to the Omni VI in operation than the Paragon. It also has a quiter synthesizer. I had intended to carefully compare the two, and then decide which one of them to offer for sale. I never seem to find the time to make my careful comparison. So I expect that I'll be keeping the 586, because it has AM TX (actually SSB with reinserted carrier) capability and the 585 does not. Is there any other significant difference in capability or performance between the two rigs? If you had to choose between two 585s, or two 586s, or the combination that you do have, what pair would you choose, and why? Thanks, Ken N6KB >The 585 is a Paragon.
