<<<The typical SSB bandpass system is only about 2.4 KHz wide no matter what one does to it or tries to cram through it.>>> Well, this was true until around 1992 or so. Most new rigs of the past 10 years are capable of 3 KHz or more, out of the box: TS870, Pro II (well, okay, 2.9 KHz on that one), MP Mk V, Mk V field, Orion, Jupiter, Pegasus, perhaps others. It's a pretty big mistake to try to force wider audio through a rig than it is capable of. The result is distortion, and spurious junk getting transmitted. Most hams who know what they are doing, don't try to force more through their exciters than they are capable of handling. The fun is taking the bandwidth you have and making that sound good. All these rigs employ some sort of digital phase cancelling network for sideband generation. This allows for really nice sounding audio with a pleasant frequency response not possible before with xtal filters. The great sound of the phase cancelling rigs of the past is now possible with DSP, with great carrier and opposite SB suppression. that's why the Orion, Jup and Peg sound as good as they do.
