I am beginning to wonder if this phenomena is not related to the BFO carrier
position relative to the slope of the bandpass filter. This can be quite
different from brand to brand of transceiver as each company has their idea
just where the correct position is actually located.
I have clearly determined that the BFO carrier placement does dramatically
affect the audio low frequency response, both on receive and transmit.
Hence, the resulting effect is a dramatic difference in the character of the
male voice. Added or missing only a few dB at 100 Hz or so at the low end
makes a big difference in perceived sound as that 100 Hz can be nearly an
octave of bandwidth.
As a side comment, I rarely hear a female voice on SSB that I think sounds
good. In researching this point, based on the data from Klark-Teknik
Electronics Ltd., as related to the musical scale, the male voice
fundamental range is some 80 Hz to 500 Hz for the average Bass and Baritone,
while the Contralto and Soprano range is 250 Hz to 1.2 KHz. When adding
natural harmonics (5th) to these ranges, on can see that the SSB system was
designed for the male voice. (Sorry ladies).
