The general rule of filtering ANY signal is to do so as early in the
receiver chain of circuits as possible. The bandwidth needed to pass all
the RF signal limits the filter sharpness there, and you can get sharper
filtering at the IF; after shifting the signal frequency. Finally,
filtering after the detector can be used for audio bandwidth filters, but
does nothing to prevent or mitigate an overloaded detector responding to
other signals in the IF bandwidth than the one desired.
