So, what's the best/cheapest solution of getting the RS-232 plug from my
Yaesu FIF-232C box into a USB on the new computer?

Best is not often the cheapest. :)

It is well known that USB to serial adapters that use the FTDI chipset are, by far, the most reliable and troublefree. Be careful though -- it's easy to buy counterfeit products on the internet. Elecraft sells a known good adapter cable that uses the FTDI chipset. Not the cheapest. Don't buy an older one of their units used -- they used a different chipset, and it had problems. They changed a number of years ago.

Edgeport is a known good mfr of USB to serial adapters.
