It's nice that Mike "suspects" that there are good reasons for open logs to
exist. I'm with Hans on this one... I'd like to know what they are.
And while that may not matter for a contest who's sponsor has decided to
make all submitted logs open... what about those who haven't? Or do we just
assume that because one organization decided it was a good thing, that's
good enough?
There's been a presumption all along that open logs is a good thing, but I
have yet to see one that holds up to critical inspection.

Actually I think we have. Since it is required by the sponsor it really
doesn't matter.
I suspect there are good reasons for doing this. I will trust the sponsor
and the log checkers just as I have since I became licensed.
