Jim,

You have to follow the wiring as shown on the SCHEMATIC 
included with the radio.  The DIN plug pinout is not correct as shown 
on the photo.  You also need to connect pins 3 and 8 on the DIN 
plug to enable transmit when you insert the plug.  There is no 
software switch needed.  Your problems are a result of an error in 
the D manual.
