Thanks to Joe, W4TV, and Ron, N0AT, for suggesting I change the MOD INPUT -
DATA OFF MOD to MIC, USB in the 7610. That got the internal sound card working.
Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks! HI
My voice files are working wonderfully now and I don't have to parallel my
microphone and audio input into the mic jack of the radio anymore. Yes, I do
own a microphone. It's attached to my headset!

Oh - I forgot to mention (for everyone) that I did find a way to do what I
originally wanted to do - record through the radio mic to a WAV file.
Sorta. I stumbled into this on another reflector.

Before you record, you turn up the monitor audio. Probably way up. Then you
record. The sounds card picks up the monitor audio. I did verify that it
works on the K4, however even with turning the monitor to the max level I'm
not sure there was enough audio level on the playback - it did put out full
power but the K4 ALC levels were low**. So on air tests would be needed.
(Yes I had all Windows sound card levels also maxed out.)

** FYI on a K4 you adjust your mic gain for an ALC reading of 5-7 on
transmit. I was seeing 1-2 on playback.

hi Don - My request has gotten more involved since I first made it, since
I now also have to set something up on an FTDX5000, which does not have an
internal sound card. This is for a multi-2 setup where ideally you want
each operator to be able to sit down, record their 3 files, and go.

Off list I was sent a file describing how to set up to key an internal DVR
using radio commands from Writelog macros. That would be great if it works,
since both FTs have DVRs. If it works I'll report back.

Thanks! - jeff wk6i

OK, for grins I tried using my voice files using the IC-7610 internal
sound card and it didn't work. I tried using USB and USB-D modes. I had the
IC-7610 CODEC set as sound card for transmit in WL Sound Board mixer
control.

Since that didn't work, I then connected my onboard sound card output to
the microphone input (like I did it back in 2018) and it worked after
setting the onboard sound card for transmit in WL Sound Board mixer
control. I made a contact in the contest.

So I'm not sure why I can't use the '7610 USB supplied sound card.
Missing something. Maybe I'll open up the Help file next.

There was a very good article in the January 2012 CQ magazine by Jamie
Dpuree, NS3T, titled "Who Needs a Microphone for a Phone Contest?". I still
have a copy and back in 2018 I used the article to help me set up voice
files for WriteLog using a program called Audacity
https://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
I used a $5 mic/headset to record the files. During the ARRL
International Grid Chase in 2018, I entered as many contests as I could.
Not one who enjoys yelling into a microphone, I was able to use my voice
files with WriteLog to run several PHONE contests without having to use a
microphone. It was just like CW and RTTY, just working the keyboard.

hi - I don't phone contests very often, you will be able to tell in a
second. :)

I have a radio that has an internal sound card on a USB port. Let's say
what kind of radio doesn't matter for the moment**. What I want to do is
be
able to record my messages using the microphone on the radio using
shift+Fn, thus creating a .wav file, and play them back using using my Fn
keys.

This seems like it would be perfectly obvious how to do this but after
googling and trying stuff for quite a while, I'm left stumped. I'm not
getting a recording, no .wav file is showing up. I know the mic is
working.
Help?

thanks! - jeff wk6i

** I'm currently trying to get this working on a K4 to see how it's done,
but later I'm going to another shack where I'm going to want to set this
up
on an FTDX10. Thus the generic question.
