In response to your list of "drawbacks" to installing XP on your 500 MHz
PIII machine:
My station computer is a six year-old PIII machine with a 550 MHz processor
and I run Win XP with no problems. I also used the freeware I/O S/W to
activate my ports and use two LPT ports--one for keying with Writelog and
the other to run a legacy LajerJet LJ4M printer. I have had as many as six
serial ports running--two-built-in "real" COM ports and two added PCI cards,
one with the second LPT port.
The machine also has USB, which is used for other purposes, including a
wireless mouse.
I did not jump through any fiery hoops. It just ran.
Did I miss anything?

installing XP but a new 3 Ghz processor with 512MB on memory is very
inexpensive.
Here are the drawbacks to using something like a PII or III PC.
1. NO USB
2. Unsure if XP will load and run correctly
2. LPT not available with XP
And if you load W 98 V2
1. Many networks and ISP's are dropping W98 support
2. Norton is dropping W98 any version support
So with an older PC use it for WP or donate it .
My only regret in deciding not to use it is that its the last Microsoft
Office to actually bundle ACCESS. With XP (Home or Professional) ACCESS
is another expensive item and Microsoft says no upgrades. You can
upgrade ACCESS XP to the new OS coming in January. Planned obsolescence!
