You guys are great. Many thanks for all the tips and suggestions. In a
nutshell:
1. Be sure all latest drivers and updates are installed. A variation on
this was to reinstall the original ac97 driver that shipped with the
motherboard.
2. Get into Windows and/or bios to resolve address or resource conflict.
3. Put the pci card into a different slot so Windows will see it
differently.
4. Consider adding a usb audio device.
