Sorry about all that, Al. XP SP2 has a very bad rep. My company has
directed employees not to install SP2. Microsoft announced at the very
beginning that SP2 would create backward incompatibilities and alerted
application developers to test their software and change it to fit.
"Unt you vill enchoy it!" Here is an early article on the subject:

As of September, my IT guys were still saying to avoid it and the
warning is still up on their info page today. It should never have
been called a service pack upgrade; it's really a new OS release and
lots of apps have problems with it.

You can restore WL by editing writelog.ini. In Machiavellian fashion,
Writelog stores this little gem in c:\winnt! It's a text file and it's
not hard to find the references to COMn:. Expect some interactions
among several parameters, of course - I've not done this particular
bit of salvage so I can't tell you what to expect. But you can almost
certainly get back to safety. If you prefer, you can use
WlIniEdit.exe, aftermarket freeware that gives you a nifty little GUI
for editting this config file. Just google around and you'll find it.

If you can do it, consider deep sixing SP2. I don't know how hard that
is but visions of disk wiping and starting from an old installation CD
come to mind. Hopefully it's not that bad.
