Ed,
I'm no expert, but from what I've read, the only two programs that 
Win98 requirs to be in memory are Explorer and Systray.  Some of 
the other things in there can be figured out by their names, and 
some not too easy to decipher. For example, in my system 
Qagent and Qwdlls are related to Quicken download manager. 
Iowatch is for the Iomega zip drive. And so on. As I usually don't 
pay bills or back up to Zip drive during a contest, I delete these 
(they automatically reload next time you reboot your computer).

You can also go right to the system tray (bottom right on the task 
bar) and right click and select close for several items, such as 
Task Scheduler, Virus scanners, etc.
