Good luck with this one, Rick. I have the same type of system (stock 500
Mhz Dell Dimension with one COM port). I tried three different PCI
expander cards and couldn't get any of them to install correctly -- so
much for Plug-n-Play! I also tried the Entegra USB hub, which worked for
a few hours and then kept hanging up, needing a power recycle of the
system and the hub to free it up. In the end, I left my system with a
local shop and said "put whatever in that works...". I now have an
additional two COM ports, but these haven't been completely problems
free.
There was a discussion on the DX4WIN reflector some time ago, and the
general consensus seemed to be that ByteRunner PCI expansion cards
seemed the most reliable. However, I gather they're a little pricey.
