While it's not the end all be all box we would all like, it is a step in the
right direction. Let's be realistic, 222 and 902 aren't bands anywhere but here
so they aren't going to include them just for our market. I have a IC-705 and
it's a pretty slick rig. Using it for 50-432 (10m to drive a 222 transverter)
is a nice set up. Adding the IC-905 and using the 144 output to drive a 902 and
3400 transverter would make a very nice setup. Even if you have to run a
separate PTT line to key those but I'll bet you can find a PTT somewhere in the
box or use a bias tee to run PTT up a piece of coax (say for your 222 antenna?)
Point is, for anyone who has built a remote tower box with transverters, amps,
a bazillion relays, 10 MHz source, 10 MHz distribution, AND worry about
powering it all, this is very nice. Hopefully the price will be below $3K which
is what it costs to build a decent remote box.
Typically, POE is 15 watts at 48v, POE+ is 30W. If they used Hi-POE it could
provide up to 100W. With 10W out on 144-1200, they have to have at least POE+
so my hope is they used the 100W version (which is only a little over 2A at
48V!!)
We will just have to see all the particulars when it comes out. From the video,
I didn't see a CI-V jack so no band data is available unless you make a USB
decoder and then you might lose the audio codec. A simpler way is to use the
antenna ports via N1MM's parallel port configuration for band selection on non
supported bands. I'm sure some smart person could use an Arduino or Raspberry
pi to do it also.
Lets keep our fingers crossed it won't take a second mortgage on your house to
afford it!!

A innovative rig.
I like the ability to remote the RF to the tower top with the antennas. How
much power can I extract from the PoE at the remote box, to power other stuff ?
Or use the remote box in the shack with a short ethernet (data + PoE) cable.
Where is 222 MHz ? and 3400 MHz ? and 902 MHz ???
Will it play full duplex, 10 GHz up and 2.4 GHz down like on QO-100 geosync
satellite ?How about full duplex 430 MHz up and 2M down ? or vice versaWill
it play 2304 and 2401 MHz, How about both 10.368 GHz and 10.451 GHz ? all in
the same box ?I would need a PTT output to drive the IPA/PA on the tower. Can
the base unit do RF offsets to directly read out the RF when I use a
transverter on 222 MHz ?I like the built in GPS discipling of all of the local
oscillators.
I like it. But, what is the best price point with 10 GHz ? $2,500 ???

Well it’s certainly a breakthru providing a commercial radio on the bands above
1.2 ghz. But has several strange limitations – The 2m, 70cm and 23 cm outputs
all come out of ONE port and it’s on top of the tower ? Not exactly compatible
with power amps...and you sure need a few at these power levels. I would have
designed the 3 lower bands with the RF down at the shack with 3 separate
outputs like the IC-9700. The optional antennas are all low gain vertically
polarized...useless for DX/contest/mountain top work. What market did they have
in mind where 0.5w and a vertical lo-gain antenna on 10 ghz would be of any use
?
Also probably $5k with the 10ghz module.....not gonna sell a lot of these I
think..
