There is no FT4 activity above 6M out west that I know of.  There is one
guy in SW UT that runs a JS8 beacon on 2M, which I see spotted once in a
while, mainly by guys in Las Vegas, which isn't a very difficult path.

A lot of us western guys use FT8 on 2, 222 & 432 when we're attempting
difficult paths.  We also use JT65 when things are REALLY tough - in my
experience, you can get another 10 dB (+/-) of margin using JT65, if you
don't have an issue with the 4X increase in QSO time.

I have a HUGE beef with FT8, more so when we're contesting.  I think it's
utterly STUPID for everybody to crowd the FT8 frequency (I'm speaking of
6M...) when the band is capable of good rate on SSB (or CW...).  For
contesting, FT8's rise in popularity is the first time the contesting
community has totally embraced something that lowers your score !
