Hi Steve,
Several ways to tell the difference between FT4 and FT8.
The 6m FT4 watering hole is 50.318MHz for now (This could change) vs.
50.313 for FT8
The FT4 signal is 90 Hz wide compared with 50Hz for FT8
FT4 TX/RX period is 6 seconds vs. 15 seconds for FT8.
And if you have a good ear, you can hear the difference. Take a listen on
14.080 Mhz.
FT4 vs. FT8 question is a good one and not sure there is an answer yet.
Trade off is speed for sensitivity.
If the band is wide open with strong signals, FT4 would be the obvious
choice, if it isn't open or sort of open probably FT8 would be better. Just
consider it a new tool in the toolbox and you will need to learn how and
when to use it to make the best use of what you have. Last heard, FT4
won't be available for the ARRL June contest or the CQ contest in July.
