Hello everyone interested in this topic.....Recently, I posted that I
log all "digital" contacts as PH in the VHF contests. I got a few
"flames" for that, but my point is that essentially, all the "digital"
modes are tones injected into the microphone path. To me that makes
them PH rather than anything else. I have never had a contact or a log
rejected because of this. The VHF contests are not mode specific, so
what you put for the mode is basically unimportant.
The main objection was that this threw off LOTW from its appointed
rounds. Since I do not believe in LOTW, this is not of any consequence
to me, as I will never use it.
Maybe in HF contests, this topic is meaningful, but I do not think that
it matters for the VHF contests. I could be wrong. I know that I
certainly don't want to have to edit all my logs trying to figure out
which contacts are truly SSB/FM and which are just audio tones.

Here is the answer we used last year for D-Star inquiries where audio goes into
a microphone and exits via a speaker:
*D-Star is like any other phone contacts. But, D-Star contacts in Field Day MUST be
Point to Point (aka peer-to-peer) – NOT THROUGH INTERNET GATEWAYS and NOT
THROUGH REPEATERS (with exception of Satellite contacts). All contacts must be via RF
from station A to station B.*

Share what they say with the rest of us. Asking questions like this
on here only invites speculation and misinformation. By the way, FCC
regulations have nothing to do with the contest rules. If the ARRL
wants to categorize digital voice as digital for the purposes of their contests
they can.

The FCC believes, in it's heart of hearts, that it's Phone
regardless of the mode. At least until Title 47 of the code of
federal regulations is repealed.
IIRC, ARRL Field Day rules don't get that specific, but I assume
they follow part 97, so phone.
