GPS in the field.....K1WHS

Dave:  I picked up a Samsung Tab 3 WiFi only version   on sale several months
back
And run the HamGPS Android app that works offline.  GPS sensitivity remarkable
On it compared to my old Garmin handheld that does maindenheads.  The HamGPS
app proivides maindenhead info and bearings to other maidenheads.

Also like how I can pair it to my Tivo box to easily search and watch
SignalPath blog and other tech youtube vids synced to my TiVo & TV set. Camera
useful in  the shop for dissassembly photos, Net access, docs, etc.  Think
multipurpose.  Sometimes I want on line access remotely, I figure a hotspot
device can do that if really necessary.......

Man I got a pile of answers on the GPS question. Unfortunately, I was looking
to get a good modern (current) handheld for being in the woods. My camp up
north is surrounded by pretty wild country and I could really use a good
handheld GPS. It is very easy to get lost there. The woods are so thick that a
handheld compass has plenty of trouble since landmarks cannot be seen very
well. Also, being 70 years old, my eyesight is not so great and I need a good
display. The older units don?t really look like they will cut the mustard, so I
was hoping to find a newer unit with a better display. I do not have a smart
phone, and one of my goals in life is to never ever have a smart phone.
I really appreciate all the comments and suggestions. I can?t thank
everybody with a personal message, but I want everyone to know that I
appreciate all the input. A great group of folks on this reflector for sure.

Garmin "E-Trex" hikers' GPS is still in production,
I think it does have Maidenhead Grid Locators.

Garmin Nuvi 500 and 550??, useable by hikers/cars, no longer sold, has
Maidenhead Grid Locators & is great.

My Garmin eTrex hikers' GPS, although not the biggest, bestest with all the
bells and whistles, does display "trail" lines of where you've been. It
doesn't show a map or anything but it does have a line of your route. It
does help to keep you from getting lost in that you can just re-trace the
route you came on, or get back to the route you came on by intersecting it
and then following the same route back to your starting point. It's kept me
from getting lost quite a few times!

And it's pretty accurate on grid lines. I once drove down a road 500 feet
into the next grid square according to it.

Dave,

Garmin makes a series of Android-based hand-held GPSs. A friend of mind
has the Garmin Monterra that he uses for hiking (as well as driving, as there
are car and bicycle mounts available). What this means is that you can add
(almost) any Android app to your Garmin GPS.

Hence, you can add one of the many apps that display maidenhead grids (like
"GPS Test+" or "GPS Status"). The down side: the units are pricy.

Best,
   Darryl

I'll be 63 next Sunday and resisted a "smart phone" for the longest.

About 3 years ago I bought a Google Nexus 3 ordered a sim card from
straight talk (W-M) and regret not doing it sooner. The phone is mine
and not mine and some carrier until I fulfill some stupid two year
contract. I pay $45/mo, no contract and unlimited talk/text/data.
I'm not one of these who are driven to go buy the latest iwhatever and
I figure I should be able to get another year or two at least out of
it and see what's on the market then.
