John,  

  Since you are coming from the HF world, one other very important item should 
be considered,
 a low noise receiving preamp. The old adage; "If you can't hear 'em….." is 
really true in
the vhf/uhf realm. Do a little research on low noise receiving preamps then 
install one at the 
antenna, if at all possible... as opposed to, at/in the rig.
