I use #8 wire also from the van battery to a 100amp solenoid (it had 2 50-amp terminals in parallel) and this is distributed through switches to three separate sets of 100A Gel Cells (2 each in parallel). I got the Gel Cells as surplus from various sources, but keep them in matched pairs. I use a 50Amp fuse in the line from the auto battery, and have metering for voltage and current for the line. It also allows me to switch and check the voltage of each pair of batteries and charge rates.
I can run the rigs for about 2 hrs during a contest without turning on the motor to charge the batteries. I charge one set at a time, as the current to charge all three when they are real low exceeds the capability of the alternator which is stock in my 94 Ford Econoline. I can also run the engine while operating, but it adds some RF and ambient noise. Depends on whether I'm using a lot of the 400W 2m amp, or just the smaller microwave stuff and whether we need heat or AC depending on the season.
I have not switched to PowerPoles in the van. Most all the rigs are hooked directly to the battery terminals with appropriate gauge wire and ring lugs. Be sure to cover the battery terminals so that no errant tool or wire or chassis falls and shorts them during the ride. 73, Rick K1DS/R
