In general I would stay far away from Yaesu. Its almost impossible to get in
touch with anyone at Yaesu to answer the phone call you back or for that
matter how do you get help?

Subject: [VHFcontesting] FT- 100 D
I am looking into getting a Yaesu ft-100d for my christmas present. Have any
of the subscribers used this rig ? Can anyone give me a little feedback ? I
am particularly interested in it's usefulness in "Weak Signal" operating,
and does the reciever stack up to other rigs on the market.
One final question , at 100w HF/6M . 50w 2m , and 20w 70CM, are these output
powers variable like a IC-706 mk II for instance ?
Any help and/or comments will be greatly apprieciated.

It is an OK rig for casual use but I wouldn't consider it a serious
contesting radio if that is what you are looking for. Sensitivity on 144
and 432 MHz seems not quit what it should be and if you have any loud big
guns around you can forget about using it during a contest or big band
opening. I have one that I keep in the shack. I use it as a backup to my
usual rigs and transverters, chat with the locals and monitor the local
repeaters. Take it mobile/portable sometime and that is fun. The TX output
powers are all independently variable on HF, 6, 2 and 432 via items in the
menu. I hope that this helps.

Jim's comments got me thinking that you might want to look at the FT-847 if
you're looking for a radio that is somewhat closer to the HF Rig/Transverter
performance level in a single box.
The 847 has separate RF outputs for HF, 6, 2 and 70cm which is very
convenient. Each output is adjustable independently too.
It's not perfect, but does a good job especially on 6, 2 and 70cm. It's HF
performance is probably slightly better than the FT-100, but it is a
"casual" use HF rig in my opinion.
