I wonder if it is the connector or the pot that is intermittent. A
couple of tests that might help are to check the total pot resistance -
500 ohms - if stable that verifies those two connections. Then the
stability of the wiper to each end of the pot which can't distinguish
between a bad wiper or a bad connector but can between either end wire
connection problems. I'd use a classic metered VOM to watch for needle
twitch and to put some current into the system.
It takes less than 12v to get motion so a bench power supply can move
the rotator for the testing (assuming your rotators are the DC motor
versions).
Replacing a pot is a bit tricky and the pot must have enough electrical
and mechanical travel, it's not a standard volume control.

I have 5 Yaesu 2800s and have an issue with one at 80 feet. All others operate normally. The one at 80 feet has
indicator issues. Shows wrong direction of rotation sometimes (CCW vs CW), slow to no rotation at times...generally
flakey. I have runs to the rotor cable from the shack out to the box under the tower and have terminal strips which
allow me to switch out the cable and boxes. So basically UI ran a different box and cable to the tower and then to the
rotor in question. No change. So I know the issue is from the box at the base to the rotor.
I know water incursion is an issue with the 2800s, so when I installed the rotors
last year I used a high quality caulk on the plugs. However, my guess is I've
got water seepage into the connector.
Any thoughts on this and the best way to "dry it out" ? I know I have to
remove the cable connector to do it, but any suggestions for solving the rotor issue would be
appreciated.
