I noticed pretty much the same here in Southern California, Rick. I
curious about this yesterday, so I looked at RBN data comparing K2AV,
N4AF, and N1LN in the 2021 ARRL 160 contest from several nodes in
California. Using 3830, I confirmed that all three stations were in the
high power category. K2AV definitely held his own against those two big
gun counterparts.

I will have to give K2AV credit in that his signal is always solid copy
and pretty
impressive for just using an FCP. He holds his own with the other east
coast signals here. I can count on a QSO with him in every contest.
He also hears well, FWIW. No problem working him with low power.
(My Alpha 9500 is still in the process of repair :-(
