Well, I agree 100% that tennis shoes are not the preferred footwear for
tower climbing. Having said that, I have a pair of Redwing boots with
steel arch inserts that work very well. However, I seldom wear them
because they are heavier than my tennis shoes. At my age, nearing 80, my
energy is limited and so I wear tennis shoes to save the energy that would
be expended in lifting the heavy boots. . Oddly, I can work for hours on
the tower without my feet hurting. Having said all of this, I should note
that my towers are Rohn 45 and 55, which have larger diameter Z braces.
I'm sure that is the difference.
I have now officially, and finally, retired from climbing after 64 years.
I can still climb, but my hand and arm strength has deteriorated to the
point that I don't think I can handle the size antennas that I put up.
Unfortunately, this comes at a time when I have a pair of 6BA-JK and an
XR5JK on saw horses ready to put up. I am in the process of looking for
someone to climb. I have arranged for a 193 foot crane since the antennas
will be at 146, 105, and 75 feet with a three stack switch box. I am very
interested to compare operation of each combination.
