A stiff steel or wood (it's lighter) shank is essential. If you always have
your arch on a rung, partial- or 3/4 shanks are ok.

I have full-length wood shanks (left over from previous hobbies), and can
comfortably stand on a rung with just the front inch of sole... but they
are single-purpose; not fun to walk in otherwise.
