The trouble with this question (a FAQ!) is that many
ops have only tried 10 feet because they are constrained
by deer.  They might report "it works great", but they
have not compared it to, say 2 feet, so such data is
of limited value.  On the other hand, I actually set
up two parallel beverages 50 feet apart with a remote
switching relay, and did A/B tests.  At my QTH at least,
2 feet worked better than 10 feet consistently.  "YMMV", hi.

BTW, we don't have deer here.
