I use a standard analog control box with a Rotor EZ in it.
https://www.hamsupply.com/rotor-ez-hy-gain-rotor-control/
Runs great with the point and turn knob, and the RS232 control from N1MM.
But unless the beam has lots of elements, within 10 degrees is close enough.
The rotor EZ gets it withing a couple of degrees.

Typo indeed. It's a DCU-3. The encoder is the nob you turn to manually set
the direction you want to go you. Looks like a pot, but has no stops.

What is an encoder for in the DC-3 for?
Do you mean DCU-3? Again, what is the encoder for? What are you referring
to?

I like my DC-3 rotor controller, but find the encoder maddening.
It takes MANY turns to get to the direction you want to point at!
Can anyone suggest a fix or replacement encoder?
