I should also mention that after working with several crane operators, they
detest using their gear for any purpose other than to lift and place. For
example, they will not use the end of the boom for any pushing action, nor
do they like to swing the boom back & forth during lifting action. So,
even if the tower base holes are close but require a friction fit, that
doesn't mean I can get a crane op to lift the tower off the pier in the
future for maintenance purposes. That said, I'm inclined to ensure there's
a free-fit between the J-bolts and the tower base.

Steve, no question...any amount of bolt height reduction does get me closer
to the right distances...and that will make the base section easier to
install. It's certainly one solution to consider, and perhaps one part of
the final solution.

Prior to this message thread, some folks have suggested that since there's
1/8" wiggle room, the tower base may just fit anyway. All 140 Ft. of tower
is bolted together on the ground. A 200 Ft. crane then hoists the entire
tower onto the base. The tower legs are *solid* steel, not hollowed out.
This adds a significant amount of weight to the tower and that weight can be
leveraged to conform the bolts -- that's IF it's close enough. The J-bolts
are so strong that if even a tiny fraction of an inch of the bolt top lays
onto the foot, it ain't going on, even with all that weight.
