I consider Rudy Severns' work on radials to be definitive. He's done
extensive, lab-grade work on the subject, and written quite coherently
on it. Much of it was published in QEX, and all of it is on his website.
He's carefully studied both on-ground and elevated radial systems, and
his extensive modeling is accompanied by extensive measurements. Search
for Antennas by N6LF.
